a love letter.

dear new york,

it’s time for you and I to say goodbye. I’ve left a piece of my heart for you on the bedside table, which I think is a fair trade for all you’ve given me. I want to say thank you, new york, for so many things. for holding my hand quietly while I learned to stand on my own. for nurturing the friendships that I will carry with me forever. for giving my husband and I a playground as we worked through the serious stuff, a place that reminded us to laugh. thank you, new york, for helping me to find my passion simply because you were too beautiful not to photograph. thank you for the late nights and blurry taxi rides, champagne brunches and rooftop pizza. for allowing me to love you even after I realized that I didn’t want this to last forever. for helping me to remember who I am, and encouraging me to go out into the world with a courage I forgot I had. thank you, new york, for the perfect affair. I know that you will go on without me and never notice I am gone, but I will carry these years with me. I’ll remember for both of us.
